Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is it safe to give a dog a stool softener?

Stool softeners can be safely used in dogs. Commonly prescribed options include lactulose and docusate sodium (Colace or Dulcolax). The goal is to use as little as possible so that the dog can defecate easily but does not develop diarrhea. Some dogs also respond well to an increase in dietary fiber. This can be accomplished either by changing the pet’s food to a high fiber variety or by adding fiber to its current diet through a supplement or mixing in a little canned pumpkin.

Healthy dogs that are eating an appropriate diet rarely need stool softeners, so when problems with defecation become a recurring or severe problem, the pet should see a veterinarian.
